With many gyms still closed or operating at a reduced capacity and with school sports canceled, many families have to look for alternative means of fitness for their family this fall. The fall is a great time to get outside and workout as a family before the winter arrives when physical activity is often limited to indoors.
Fall fitness is also important as the seasons shift into flu season. A stronger, healthier body will help you fight off viruses and stay healthier all winter long.
We’ve put together a list of fun fall fitness activities for the whole family that will help get your heartrate up and get your family moving!
The change of season offers perfect hiking weather which is a great activity for families to do together. Hiking is a great way to get your heartrate up, get in some cardio and log some miles, all while taking in some beautiful scenery. Most states have great hiking options for beginners to more experienced hikers. Online trail finders are a great way to find detailed hiking trail information such as surface types, access points, locations, distances and available services for trails in your area. The National Park Service also has an online directory where you can search parks by name, location or activity. If you have school aged children they can easily hike on their own and if you have smaller kids, a jogging stroller or hiking backpack makes it easy to hike with little ones.
This idea kills two birds with one stone – it gets some very necessary tasks for your home done and offers some great exercise. Raking leaves is a surprisingly great cardio workout and is something the entire family can do together.
Corn mazes offer an opportunity to get outside and stretch your legs. It’s definitely not the most calorie burning item on this list, but offers a great opportunity to get outside and move around. Apple picking or pumpkin picking is also another great way to get outdoors, enjoy the weather as well as incorporating some strength training with the lifting of those bigger pumpkins!
Regardless of how old your children are, a family run is a great exercise to do together. If your children are young, simply put them in a jogging stroller and take them along! Family bike rides are another great alternative if you aren’t a fan of running.
Another great fall activity for the whole family is having your own family games in the backyard. Whether it’s football, baseball or soccer, this is a great way to exercise while having a ton of fun! You can even challenge your neighbors to a match to make it more exciting!
Digital fitness classes can be found nearly anywhere from apps on your phone to YouTube and are a great way to workout as a family. You can even take turns choosing the workout so everyone has a say in what workout you choose for that day.
If you own a treadmill, exercise bike, elliptical or rower, another fun idea is to create a family challenge. Each month choose a mileage goal and the first family member to hit that goal gets a prize. The prize may be a trophy that gets passed around, the choice of the next family movie night, or a special treat – whatever it is, make sure it’s something that gets everyone motivated!
If you don’t own any cardio equipment, now is a great time to invest in some so you can continue the family challenge well into the winter months.
